The Science

Our strains are all fermented individually by highly trained staff before going through a protective process and freeze-dried. Sounds like something out of a science fiction film, doesn’t it? But, alongside our special packaging, this is what helps keep the bacteria active even when stored at room temperature. This gives you a bit more freedom for how you keep your Bio-Kult®, with no need to keep it in the fridge, you can take your Bio-Kult® with you on your travels, keep it in your handbag, or store it where ever is easiest for you to fit in to your day-to day life.

What the bacteria names actually mean?

When you’re looking at bacteria and comparing one strain to another it can be quite a challenge to know what you’re looking at and what it all means. There are three parts that make up every bacteria name.

1. The genera (e.g. Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium)

2. The species (e.g. casei or subtilis)

3. The specific strain (e.g. LGG or PXN 37)

Try comparing the three parts of the bacteria name to a school.

  1. The genera is the school, trying to achieve an overall goal of educating all students.
  2. The species is the classroom, educating a classroom of a year group, with specific needs to that age.
  3. The specific strain, that’s the individual pupil with its own individual needs, goals and achievements.

The Science

While specific strains from the same species may exhibit some similar characteristics, they may not necessarily do the same thing behind the scenes. Much in the way that individual pupils in a classroom may be working to learn the same thing, but do so in a different way.

The pupil is the equivalent to the numbers/letters at the end, in this case the PXN numbers. The PXN strain numbers are unique identifiers we have allocated to each of our strains. These are listed in published scientific research conducted using our products.

All our probiotic strains are fully identified and safe to use. The strains are all lodged at the National Collection for Industrial, Marine and Food Bacteria (a national culture collection bank) based in Aberdeen, UK.
